A record-breaking number of 99 students have qualified for the next edition of the “Exceptionally Talented at Wrocław University of Science and Technology” program. During the conference "Novices in Science,” our students told high school students why it is worth taking part in it and what benefits come from the cooperation with a tutor. Our Faculty was represented by Bartosz Brejna and his tutor, Prof. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz.

– Almost a thousand people have taken part in the twelve editions of the „Exceptionally Talented at Wrocław University of Science and Technology" program to date. I think we are about to break this barrier soon. We already have over 100 tutors involved in the project, and winners of national olympiads and competitions, as well as people with outstanding recruitment indicators, can take part in it – said Prof. Kamil Staniec, vice-rector for education, during the conference. – It must be emphasized that the winners are not random people. You cannot get into this program by accident, you have to earn it by following a difficult path –he added.

bsa__20211207_2079.jpgThis year, 99 people were selected for the program, 15 more than last year. The vast majority are high school graduates, and the largest number of winners study at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. Everyone could count on support in the form of:

• a scholarship of PLN 500 to 900 per month,
• a place in a student dormitory,
• care of the tutor.

For young people, cooperation with a tutor from the beginning of their studies is one of the greatest advantages of the program. It allows them to be quickly included in scientific and research work at the university. So far, about 350 students have taken advantage of this option.

– In this case, tutoring is a teaching formula in which teachers introduce their students to the world of research. Nothing can be more developing for the student than the opportunity to get involved in research projects, participate in conferences and prepare their first scientific publications – emphasized Prof. Kamil Staniec.

During the fourth edition of the conference „Novices in Science", talented students who participate in the program „Exceptionally Talented at Wrocław University of Science and Technology" talked about the results of their research conducted under the supervision of their tutors. They also shared their experiences with students from high schools cooperating with the University and talked about the benefits of individual work with a tutor.

Bartosz Brejna from our Faculty talked about a new method of initializing the k-means algorithm. The tutor of our student is Prof. Adrianna Kozierkiewicz, from Applied Computer Science.

His work entitled „The New K-Means Initialization Method" was written as part of the "Exceptionally Talented at Wrocław University of Science and Technology" program. This is also why the second year student of Applied Computer Science participated in the  ICCCI 2024: 16th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence, held between 9 and 11 September in Leipzig, Germany.

During the „Novices in Science" conference, Kostiantyn Stambulskyi from the Faculty of Electronics, Photonics and Microsystems spoke about a miniature gas analyser and other applications of light in microsystems (tutor: Prof. Tomasz Grzebyk), Alicja Musiał and Katarzyna Wilczewska from W12 presented the project „From powder to biorobot – 3D printing from composites" (tutor: Dr. Karolina Laszczyk), and Paweł Nowak from the Faculty of Mathematics presented a comparative analysis of machine learning algorithms in the context of predicting CO2 emission classes of vehicles (tutor: Dr. Adam Zagdański).
