Artificial Intelligence

Description of the field of study

The Artificial Intelligence programme trains computer engineers in a seven-semester first-cycle (Bachelor’s) degree taught in Polish. Graduates gain broad IT knowledge and skills, as well as advanced mathematical knowledge necessary to operate within the field of artificial intelligence. The programme was created in response to the needs of the modern economy, the labour market, and digital transformation. It is part of the project "EDU PWR – Education at Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Response to the Needs of the Modern Economy and Labour Market" (https://edutime.pwr.edu.pl/), implemented by Wrocław University of Science and Technology within the European Funds for Social Development programme (FERS).

Students will acquire qualifications that include knowledge, skills, and engineering competencies in the following areas:

  • Computer architecture and organisation,

  • Programming languages, algorithms and data structures, programming paradigms, and efficient coding techniques,

  • Computer networks, system administration, and cybersecurity, including auditing methods and securing AI systems,

  • Databases and data warehouses, database design, extraction, analysis, and processing of multimodal, complex and large-scale data, and data-driven inference,

  • Software design and software project management,

  • Advanced programming tools and methods,

  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and knowledge engineering,

  • Distributed systems, cloud computing, resource demand estimation, and the development of cloud-based solutions,

  • Deep learning, generative models, and other advanced AI tools,

  • Implementation and maintenance of AI models and systems,

  • Business, ethical, legal, and social aspects of artificial intelligence,

  • Rapid adaptation to evolving knowledge, techniques, and tools in the AI field,

  • Development trends in artificial intelligence.

Graduates are capable of defining a problem, acquiring necessary data, designing a solution, developing and training a model prototype, and implementing a solution based on the trained prototype, including estimating required resources and designing the necessary infrastructure.

They also possess advanced foundational knowledge in mathematics and science, including mathematical analysis, algebra with analytic geometry, logic, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, and physics – all essential for developing AI-based solutions and for continuing their education in second-cycle (Master’s) studies.

An important complement to an engineer's education is knowledge of entrepreneurship, business startup and operation (especially startups), and the social and professional challenges that can be addressed using artificial intelligence. In addition, graduates are proficient in English and can confidently express themselves, both orally and in writing, on work-related topics.

The programme also places strong emphasis on soft skills such as solution presentation, storytelling, teamwork in interdisciplinary environments, empathy, and problem definition (design thinking).

Employment perspectives

  • continue their education in second-cycle (Master’s) studies,

  • launch their own startups focused on AI-based products,

  • are employed as designers and developers of AI-based solutions (e.g., AI Engineer, ML Engineer, DS Engineer, ML Ops, AI Ops, Data Engineer).
