Representatives of local government, business from the ICT industry and representatives of other business entities have become members of the 24-person Advisory Board at our Faculty. The term of office of the Board expires in 2024.
At the first online meeting, the members of the Advisory Board elected the chairman. The new chairman is Jakub Mazur, deputy mayor of Wrocław. He will be accompanied by two deputy chairpersons: Kamila Cioś from Google and Maciej Dziedzic from Nokia.
The biggest and leading Faculty
– It is a very important moment for all of us. I am glad that the Faculty managed to gather such a noble group, representing so important institutions, companies, but also important people – said Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs, rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
He expressed hope that with the participation of such an excellent group, broadly understood ICT will be developed in the areas of both staff training and research development.
- The Faculty is the largest centre of this type in the country, in terms of the number of fields of study, students and the staff. The faculty is the largest not only in the literal sense, but also as a leading intellectual, research and academic centre – said the rector.
Relations with the environment important for the Faculty
On the other hand, Prof. Andrzej Kucharski, dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, placed the greatest stress on how he envisions cooperation with the Advisory Board.
– Universities are not completely independent entities. Our goal is not only to do important research or to teach students. In an industry such as ours, i.e. in ICT, relations with the socio-economic environment are important – said the dean.
The Faculty is a community of scientists and students in the socio-economic environment
He admitted that he personally does not like either the perception of the university as a resource base for the socio-economic environment in which the student is a product, or the customer approach, where students or the socio-economic environment are the university's clients.
I support another view: a university is a community of scientists, researchers and students. We want to add another element to this community, i.e. the socio-economic environment – said Prof. Andrzej Kucharski.
He explained that cooperation can take place on many levels: research and teaching, but also in the area of internships and apprenticeships.
– I encourage you to look for a common field for such cooperation, which is actually already taking place. I mean, among others, implementation doctorate programs, which are pursued within the research areas of the university and partly of the industry. There is cooperation at the student level, i.e. writing diploma theses jointly with entrepreneurs or local governments. There is cooperation with student research clubs, on particular projects or the organization of apprenticeships and internships for our students. What I mean is a win-win cooperation. We provide students with internships. Students can establish professional relationships and see what life is like after graduation. In turn, the Board members can take a look at the students and look for future candidates for your companies – said the dean.
The professor added that the Faculty wants to offer students not only what he considers important, not only what the students want from the Faculty, but also what the future employer considers important. And it can take place in many fields.
– So far, it has been a good practice for the classes to be held by company representatives, in the form of non-compulsory classes, where students can learn new skills or broaden their interests. It is also possible to include certain activities in the study programs. This, of course, requires an appropriate formal environment, but we offer such activities where students benefit from classes held by representatives of the industry as part of their studies, which means that they can experience not only the academic world, but also the practical and professional world. What is more, we are constantly trying to improve our study programs and here I will be asking you for help, reviewing preparing these programs with us – said Prof. Andrzej Kucharski.
At the end, the dean encouraged members of the Advisory Board to come up with new initiatives and to support the Faculty in various aspects. He added that he is very pleased with the composition of the Board.
The Faculty wants to respond quickly to the challenges posed by the changing reality
Prof. Tadeusz Więckowski, head of the Department of ICT and Telecommunications, believes that the creation of the new Faculty is a response to the challenges posed by the reality of the 21st century.
– The 21st century is known as the industrial revolution. It is associated with telecommunications and ICT networks, the Internet, Industry 4.0, communication systems, 5G, and the Internet of Things. There is a need for specialists and engineers educated in a more interdisciplinary manner. Modern solutions, artificial intelligence, digitization of industry, which is a big challenge, means that we need slightly different professionals – said Prof. Więckowski.
That is why the Faculty sets itself as a goal to closely cooperate with the local government, as well as with the economic environment and with the industry.
– We would like it to be a very modern faculty, open to the challenges posed by the rapidly changing reality. We must react quickly to these challenges, to this reality. We would like the University and the Faculty to play a significant role not only in the region that is closest to us but also in the country – said Prof. Więckowski.
The Advisory Board of the Faculty includes:
