Wrocław University of Science and Technology has received over PLN 35 million from EU funds for the development of technologies related to public safety and applications of green technologies in industry. One of the projects is coordinated by Prof. Kamil Staniec from our Faculty. The project is financed under European Funds for Lower Silesia 2021-2027.
This is the new name of the program for our region, for the coming years. The funds can be used to finance projects and investments that are consistent with one of the goals of the common policy, such as environmental protection, development of entrepreneurship, strengthening the so-called „social Europe" and bringing it closer to citizens.
The decision about granting funds of more than 90 million Polish zloty to research projects carried out in Lower Silesia was announced by Paweł Gancarz, Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Two of these projects will be carried out at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
Public safety first
The first project is a Public Safety Technology Centre at our university, and it is dedicated to strengthening public safety at the regional level, with an emphasis on innovation and cooperation between the scientific sector and private businesses.
It focuses on eight main research areas that respond to important needs in the field of energy security, natural environment, society, as well as technical and infrastructural security. The project will involve purchasing modern research equipment and fitting specialist laboratories, which will allow innovative research and the development of new technologies.
– Thus, Wrocław University of Science and Technology will become a centre supporting the development of the „Public Safety Macrocluster", combining the potential of the university and the Lower Silesian local government. This will contribute to strengthening the research and innovative potential of the region. The project responds to specific challenges and needs in the area of public safety and is a direct response to market expectations, increasing the competitiveness and innovative character of the economic sector – says Prof. Kamil Staniec, vice-rector for education, project coordinator from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.
The funding will help improve the research infrastructure of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, as well as of the faculties of Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Geoengineering, Mining and Geology, Mechanical and Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronics, Photonics and Microsystems.
The project is expected to end in October 2026, and the total value of EU funding is almost PLN 30 million.
The future belongs to green technologies
The second project supports the development of green technologies for industry. It focuses on five key research areas: development of green formulations for agriculture, use of recycled plastics, hydrological and meteorological monitoring, sustainable production using additive technologies, and research on new materials for renewable energy sources.
– Owing to integrated research activities, including the purchase of specialist equipment and the development of dedicated research stations, we want to overcome the existing technological and infrastructural barriers, and thus increase the competitiveness and innovativeness of our economic environment. This approach will not only strengthen the research potential of our university, but also support the economic sector in implementing sustainable solutions, thus reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to environmental protection – says Prof. Robert Kudrawiec, head of the Department of Semiconductor Materials Engineering at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology, WUST.
The project will be carried out by four faculties: Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Fundamental Problems of Technology. The project is expected to end in October 2026, and the total value of EU funding is almost PLN 5.2 million.
Grants from the European Funds for Lower Silesia 2021-2027 program will also go to the Łukasiewicz Research Network – PORT Polish Centre for Technology Development. They will be used to launch the BSL-3 Rapid Epidemiological Response Laboratory and the Population Diagnostics Centre, both in Lower Silesia.
