Prof. Robert Burduk with Professor Nomination. Congratulations!

Date: 21.02.2024 Category: General

Prof. Robert Burduk (Faculty of Information and Communication Technology), Prof. Kazimierz Bęcek (Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology) and Prof. Zbigniew Michna (Faculty of Management) are three new full professors at our University.

Prof. Robert Burduk (Faculty of Information and Communication Technology)

discipline: Information and Communication Technology

prof_robert_burduk.jpgProf. Robert Burduk is a graduate from two fields of study at our University. In 1998 he graduated from Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology and in 2000 he was awarded M.Sc. in computer science from the Faculty of Computer Science and Management. He defended his doctoral thesis in 2003 at the former Faculty of Electronics,
Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and obtained his habilitation in 2014 at the same faculty.

He is the author and co-author of over 140 scientific publications, over 60 of which are indexed in the WoS database. In his scientific work, he focuses on issues related to the selection and integration of base classifiers, the use of fuzzy set theory in supervised classification and issues related to explainable artificial intelligence.

Prof. Robert Burduk is a co-editor of seven monographs published by Springer. On many occasions he was also chair of the organizational committee of the CORES international conference dedicated to computer-aided recognition systems.
He is vice-dean for academic and educational affairs at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.

Prof. Kazimierz Bęcek (Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology)

discipline: environmental engineering, mining and energy, and civil engineering, geodesy and transport

mk1_9192.jpgProf. Kazimierz Bęcek (Senior Member, IEEE) received his master's degree in geodesy and agricultural equipment from the Agricultural University of Wrocław in 1978, and his Ph.D. in geodetic sciences from the Technical University of Dresden in 1987, in recognition of his doctoral thesis on computer simulation of the atmospheric refraction phenomenon (in German); he received his habilitation degree in remote sensing at the Technical University of Dresden in 2010 based on his work on the representation of biomass in InSAR datasets (in English).

From 1989 to 1994, Prof. Bęcek worked at the School of Surveying at the University of New South Wales in Sydney (Australia). In 1995, he headed the cartography and acquisition department at a publishing house in Gold Coast, Australia. Since 1998, he has worked for the Queensland State Government and the Gold Coast City Local Government as a senior Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist.

In the years 2003-2014 he worked at the Faculty of Geography at the University of Brunei Darussalam, teaching classes in cartography, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing and geodesy. In the years 2015-2019, he worked as a professor at Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University in Turkey, where he lectured on photogrammetry, remote sensing and digital cartography. Currently, he is a professor at the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology, WUST.

His research interests focus on mathematical modelling of environmental systems, including landslide monitoring, natural hazard mapping, and remote sensing methods in ecological research, LiDAR and IoT.

Prof. Bęcek is the former vice-president of the Institute of Geomatics in Brunei. His passion is practicing gliding – he has been a licensed glider pilot for many years.

Prof. Zbigniew Michna (Faculty of Management)

Discipline: economics and finance

prof_zbigniew_michna.jpgProf. Zbigniew Michna graduated from the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology, WUST, majoring in applied mathematics in 1992. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from WUST in 1996. In the years 1996-1999 he was employed at the University of Lund (Sweden) at the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, where in 1998 he obtained his Ph.D. in mathematical statistics.

In 2010 he obtained his habilitation degree in mathematical sciences in the field of computer science at WUST. In the years 1999-2021 Prof. Zbigniew Michna was employed at Wrocław University of Economics as an assistant professor and then as an associate professor and university professor. Since 2021, he has been an employee of the Department of Operational Research and Business Intelligence at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

His research work focuses on stochastic modelling in insurance, supply chains, queuing systems and computer simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. Additionally, he deals with the extremes of stochastic processes, including Lévy processes and Gaussian processes, and their applications in insurance, supply chains and queuing systems. He publishes in journals in the field of applied probabilistics, stochastic processes, economics, finance and management.

He cooperates with scientists from the University of Lausanne (Institute of Actuarial Sciences, Switzerland), the University of Exeter Business School (Center for Simulation, Analytics and Modeling, Great Britain), the University of Aalborg (Institute of Production and Materials, Operational Research Group, Denmark) and the University of Wrocław (Institute of Mathematics).

In 2016-2020, he was a representative of academic teachers in the Senate of Wrocław University of Economics.
