The second edition of the "W kółko kręcę" cycling competition is over. Throughout October and November, residents of Wrocław earned points for cycling to work, school, home or university. The WUST team led by Mirka Gozdowska turned out to be unrivalled in Wrocław.

A year ago, Mirka also took part in the competition and did well – although she joined as late as on 15 October, and still finished in the 7th place.

– This year I used some experience from the previous edition and I started on October 1. At the end of October, when I realized that I was 2nd, I thought I had to fight and started to bike extra kilometres. I tried to ride about 30 km a day.

The bicycle means the world and freedom to me.

According to our winner, the bicycle gives independence and freedom, not to forget about the ecological aspect.

mk1_0852.jpg– Nothing else gives such freedom and independence. On a bike, you need half an hour to get virtually anywhere within your city. And regardless of the hour. You don't have to wait for the bus, you don't have to get stressed about traffic jams, you don't need to buy petrol. You are independent – says Mirka Gozdowska.

Mirka admits that although she is a very active person who engages in various forms of physical activity and has no problem with fitness, in order to participate in the action she also needed mental resistance and a lot of commitment.

– For 61 days, I rode an average of about 25 km a day, in all weather conditions. To do it, I needed to stay determined, to plan my free time in terms of cycling, and to combine it with training and everyday activities. At times I was fighting with myself because I felt physically tired and couldn't look at the bike – Mirka laughs.

She admits that at one point she fought more with herself than with the people taking part in the competition. It was more about challenging herself – finding out if she was strong enough to stick to her resolution.

– I’m happy about winning, but the greatest satisfaction comes from the knowledge I have gained about myself. Also, I am now certain that in everything we do, it's important to be able to rely on people who surround us and support us – adds Mirka.

Well done us!

Altogether, 194 cyclists from our University scored a total of 296,826 points! The Medical University, which came in second, had 61,000 points. Also, no other company and organization can boast a result even close to that obtained by our students, doctoral students and employees! The Marshal's Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, second in the classification, collected 175,000 points, i.e. only slightly more than a half of our result.
This the top 10 list. Congratulations to everyone.

The points in the competition were collected with the use of a dedicated mobile application “W kółko kręcę”. The participants used it to record their rides and collect points. Most of the points could be scored by riding to and from work (school or university – in the case of students), but some points were also available for travelling other distances at least 1.5 km in length.

Although the competition is over, we encourage you to keep on biking to the campus.
