Dr. Maciej Gębala and Dr. Eng. Marcin Markowski were appointed University Professors by the rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Congratulations!
Dr. Maciej Gębala, University Professor, vice-dean for academic and educational affairs, graduated in 1995 with a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wrocław. In 2002 he obtained PhD of mathematical sciences in the field of computer science at Wrocław University.
He was first employed in 2001 at Wrocław University of Science Technology, at the Institute of Mathematics, which would later become the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. He has been a member (since 2014) and a deputy head for didactics (since 2019) at the Department of Fundamentals of Computer Science. Since 2021, he has been vice-dean for academic and educational affairs at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.
His scientific and didactic interests include mainly algorithmics and theory of computation. He is a co-author of the study programs in the field of Algorithmic Computer Science (formerly Computer Science at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology). He runs a number of lectures in this field, for both first- and second-cycle studies. He is also the tutor of Algorithmic Computer Science.
Dr. Eng. Marcin Markowski, University Professor, in 2001 graduated with honours from the Faculty of Electronics, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, receiving his master's degree in Computer Science. In the same year, he started work at the Faculty of Electronics and completed his doctoral studies in 2005, defending his doctoral dissertation on optimization algorithms for wide area computer networks. His scientific and didactic interests include the design and management of ICT networks, aspects of ICT security and optimization. He is the deputy head of the Department of Computer Systems and Networks, the chairman of the Faculty Evaluation Committee at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology and the secretary of the Program Committee for the Technical Computer Science field of study.
Since 2019, he has coordinated the IT Mastery Centre project at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. It is a large, nationwide didactic project, implemented by five Polish technical universities, the aim of which is to improve the competences of people conducting extracurricular activities which develop IT interests and activate young people with IT talents.
He has received many awards for his activity, e.g. the rector's awards for scientific and didactic achievements and outstanding contribution to the university's activities, the Bronze Medal for Long Service and the distinction "For Service to the Faculty of Electronics".
