20 high school students from Poland and the Czech Republic took part in the Cybertron game, whose final has been held at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. The competition is organised together with the Marshal's Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. This year young students met with officers from the Central Cybercrime Bureau.

The winners of this year's edition are Matyáš Michalička and Robin Ustohal from the Czech Republic and Piotr Stefański and Wiktor Kulikiewicz from the Secondary Technical School No. 10 at Electronic Research Institute in Wrocław. The team was best by far, scoring 3400 out of 4600 points. Congratulations!

cybertron_2024_final-10.jpg„Cybertron” is a team game that tests IT skills and the ability to creatively solve problems in the field of cybersecurity and critical infrastructure. Its aim is to build awareness of the threats that may be lurking in the Internet, to learn how to deal with them and to possibly eliminate them without doing any harm to the user. The event was attended by participants from schools in Lower Silesia and Kralovohradec Krai.

– The competition not only increases the level of knowledge on topics related to cybersecurity, but also allows a deeper cooperation between the two regions. For young people, it is also a great opportunity to meet peers from other countries,” said Wojciech Bochnak, Vice-Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, during the opening ceremony.

The qualifying rounds for this year's edition of the competition were held before the summer holidays, and the finals organized at Wrocław University of Science and Technology were ultimately attended by 20 people – ten from Polanda and ten from the Czech Republic. In four-member mixed teams, they had two days to solve 15 tasks at varying difficulty levels.

– The scope of the topics is very broad, from typical cryptography, through network traffic analysis, to analysis of operating systems and web applications. The tasks are of the ‘capture the flag’ type – the participants have to find flags hidden in the tasks. The game ends on Thursday by presenting the solutions and discussing any encountered problems – explains Dr. Mateusz Tykierko from the Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing.

This is already the third edition of the competition held at our University. Two years ago, students had to solve IT puzzles and tasks in order to find the culprits behind the hacker attack. Last year, on the other hand, 25 people from Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia defended the web portal of a local newspaper against a hacker attack.

– I hope that some of the participants will choose our University to continue their educational career, even more so as we have a cybersecurity field in our Faculty. This is already happening, actually. It's worth mentioning that the game is organised by our Faculty's students, who took part in the competition two years ago – notes Prof. Andrzej Kucharski – dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.
