Our Students on the Podium in the WUST Athlete of the Year 2023 Plebiscite

 Piotr Browarski and Zuzanna Jasińska from our Faculty came second and third, respectively, in the plebiscite for the best athlete of the year at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The winner was Dorota Puzio from the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology.

We have chosen the best athlete of the year at Wrocław University of Science and Technology for the fourth time. There were ten competitors selected for the final stage by the council of coaches from among the proposals previously submitted by the supervisors of individual sports sections at WUST. Then, students and employees of our University voted for the candidates.

The final results were announced during a gala organized on Friday, 2 February, in the Student Culture Zone by the WUST Department of Physical Education and Sport. The most votes in the plebiscite were given to athlete Dorota Puzio (Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology). Students of our Faculty took second and third place. Second place went to a skier Piotr Browarski, and third to a rower Zuzanna Jasińska.

As last year, our football players were voted the team of the year. In 2023, they won the Lower Silesian Interuniversity League, took second place in the Polish Academic Championships in the classification of technical universities and eighth place in the general classification of Polish Academic Championships. Their coach is Jerzy Śliwiński.

Previous winners of the plebiscite for the best athlete of the year at Wrocław University of Science and Technology include:

  • 2018 – Joanna Pawlak (Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology) – equestrian sports.
  • 2019 – Paulina Szumska (Faculty of Mathematics) – ju-jitsu.
  • 2022 – Zuzanna Jasińska (Faculty of Information and Communication Technology) – rowing.
  • 2023 – Dorota Puzio (Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology) – athletics.

No plebiscite was held in 2020-21.

Successful sprinter

Dorota Puzio is a sprinter, specializing in 60- and 100-metre runs. On a daily basis, she trains at the GKS Start Długołęka club, under the supervision of Henryk Benkowski. – My greatest success last year was, above all, beating my personal record in the 100-metre run. In June, during the competition in Jelenia Góra, I achieved a time of 11.54 seconds – says Dorota Puzio. – This result helped me win the championship class and also allowed me to take part in the U23 European Championships in Finland.

Our student advanced to the semi-finals of the 100 m individual race and took sixth place in the 4x100 m relay. Additionally, Dorota Puzio won a bronze medal in the 100 m run during the Polish U23 Championships in Włocławek in 2023.Zdjęcie Doroty Puzio startującej do biegu

– This year, my goal is to improve my personal record again and qualify for the Polish team for the International Athletics Match of the U23 national team – says the winner of the plebiscite.

Dorota Puzio is a biomedical engineering student at W11. – I chose this field because of my passion for combining natural sciences, technology and medicine – she explains. – I hope that in the future I will be able to work on

 innovative projects that will contribute to the development of both medical and sports technologies. I believe that when combined, they can significantly improve the performance of athletes and our health.

In her free time, Dorota Puzio devotes her time to training, learning and meeting friends. Additionally, he likes playing board and computer games, and traveling. – I specialize in sprint runs because I am best at short distances and I find them fascinating. And I must add that they are not as simple as they may seem – she adds.
