The WITing team from our Faculty took part in the dragon boat competition during the Saturday's Odra River Cup 2024 picnic. The team composed of our Faculty's students and employees took sixth place in the final classification. Congratulations!
On Saturday, employees and students from our university had fun together on the WUST boulevard. After a break, the Odra River Cup picnic returned, and rowers from Wrocław University of Science and Technology once again appeared on the Odra River. The traditional part of the picnic included rowing eights races over a distance of one thousand meters, as well as a dragon boat competition.
The WITings were one of thirteen teams that took part in the dragon boat competition. Teams from various faculties, student research clubs and WUST units applied to enter the competition. The W4 team was composed of students from the Student Government, Dr. Dominik Bojko from the Department of Fundamentals of Computer Science and Prof. Paweł Wache, vice-dean for student affairs.
Each team consisted of ten rowers and one additional person who was responsible for the pace by beating the rhythm on a drum. The competition was held over a distance of 200 m. First, the boat crews raced against the clock in the qualifying session. Based on the results, the best three teams competed in the A final, and the other teams competed in the B, C and D finals, respectively.
Our team recorded good times twice and took sixth place in the final dragon boat classification. We keep our fingers crossed for an even better result next year!

During the Odra River Cup, the youngest visitors also had a chance to experiment in a dedicated camp. Eight student research clubs also prepared their stands, and the main theme of the picnic was space adventure.
Additionally, the 24th men's race was held between WUST and Wrocław University teams for the WUST Rector's Cup. The representatives of our university won the race with great advantage and improved the result of the historic competition to 22 to 2 in favour of our University. Our women's crew also returned home with the cup. In their race, our students reached the finish line slightly faster than the combined team of the University of Life Sciences and the University of Wrocław.
The race of mixed crews was also held for the first time. The men's and women's rowing eights from WUST, UWr and UPWr appeared at the start. After an initially neck and neck race, the experience and power of the hosts prevailed and the WUST crew were first to reach the finish line. The second place was taken by the UWr crew, and the third place – by the UPWr crew.
During the event, we also collected funds for the treatment of Diana, the 3-year-old daughter of our graduates, who has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disease – the Rett syndrome. The disease can be stopped by daily administration of a drug available in the USA; two-year therapy costs over PLN 4 million.
