Hanna Mazur and Wiesław Paluszyński Awarded KEN Medals

Hanna Mazur, MSc from our Faculty and Wiesław Paluszyński, MSc, the president of the Polish Information Processing Society and a member of our Faculty's Social Council, have been awarded the Medal of the Commission of National Education. The medals were awarded during the celebrations of the World Information Society Day in Warsaw on 14 May. Congratulations!

The Medal of the Commission of National Education is a prestigious award granted for exceptional contributions to education and for work with young students, including for teaching activities and efforts towards the development of education. Hanna Mazur, MSc and Wiesław Paluszyński, MSc received it at the formal request of the Main Board of the Polish Information Processing Society.

The Main Board of Polish Information Processing Society recommended four candidates to be awarded the Medal of the Commission of National Education: Dr. Beata Laszkiewicz and Hanna Mazur, MSc from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Dr. Zbigniew Szpunar from the University of Kalisz, and Wiesław Paluszyński, MSc, the president of the Polish Information Processing Society and a member of the Social Council of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.

The medals were awarded on the occasion of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day as well as the 45th anniversary of the Polish Information Processing Society. They were presented on behalf of the Minister of Science and Higher Education by a representative of the Ministry.

The event was accompanied by the “Computer Science 2026 through the eyes of PTI: achievements, perspectives, challenges” conference dedicated among others to the applications of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, and the development of digital competences.

According to the event's website, the conference was attended by representatives of public administration, the world of science, business, and industry organizations. The honourable guest was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski, and the invited guests also included Luis Fernandez-Sanz, the president of the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS).

Profiles of the medal recipients

Hanna Mazur, MSc

.

Hanna Mazur has been working at Wrocław University of Science and Technology since 1.03.1979 (47 years), currently at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, at the Department of Applied Computer Science. She obtained a Master of Science in Mathematics, specializing in Computer Science at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry of the University of Wrocław (April 1979).

She taught lectures, exercises, laboratories, project classes, and diploma theses to students in 1st to 4th year of study, in various faculties of Wrocław Tech: Information and Communication Technology, Computer Science and Management, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Fundamental Progblems of Technology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining, Architecture, and within the “Talent” initiative.

She has supervised about 120 engineering diploma theses, and has consulted on 5 master's theses.

She is the dean's representative for ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) and she was the manager of the ECDL Examination Centre at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (2010-2025). She organized three Certified ECDL Examination Laboratories at Wrocław Tech.

Since 1983, she has been an active member of the Polish Information Processing Society (PTI). For 20 years, she served as the secretary of the Lower Silesian Branch of PTI. She is a certified ECD examiner and a member of the PTI Chamber of Experts. Since 2012, she has been the deputy chair of the Section for IT Education at PTI.

She received:

• Bronze Cross of Merit (2006),
• Gold Medal for Long Service (2009),
• Medal for the 100th Anniversary of Technical Universities (2011),
• 30th Anniversary Medal of the Polish Information Processing Society (2013),
• Silver Cross of Merit (2016),
• 70th Anniversary Medal of Polish Informatics (2018),
• Silver Badge of the Polish Information Processing Society (2018) and Gold Badge of the Polish Information Processing Society (2021),
• special award Docendo Discimus (2020) from the rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology for outstanding teaching achievements.

She actively promotes computer science and works towards the integration of the IT environment. She is the author/co-author of 90 publications, including the script Data Types in Structural Programming. A Collection of Programming Tasks in PASCAL (1990). She co-authored three scripts Programming in dBase IV (1997), Elements of Computer Science (1998), Database Design (2002) and two books Designing relational databases (2004) and Structural Methodology for Designing Relational Databases (2020), which is the fundamental textbook for the Databases courses.

She is the chair of the Organizing Committee of the annual PTI Competition for the best master's theses in computer science, organized since 1984. In 2002, she developed an electronic database for the competition with students, and in 2017, as the project manager and with the help of three students, she developed and implemented an IT system enabling full electronic support for the competition: submission and review of works, supporting the work of the organizers and the competition jury. The system is in use and in the Archive tab it provides data from all competition editions since 1984 (website: kpm.pti.org.pl).

She was the editor-in-chief of two commemorative books of the Faculty of Computer Science and Management at Wrocław University of Science and Technology: 40 years have passed (2009) and the 50th Anniversary Book (2018).

Between 1997 and 2013, she taught computer science classes and served as the vice director of the Vocational School of Computer Science at PTI in Wrocław.

Wiesław Paluszyński, MSc

.

Wiesław Paluszyński, MSc is the president of the Polish Information Processing Society.

He is also the vice president of the Polish Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications and a member of the Committee of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

He is a graduate of the Faculty of Electronics of Warsaw University of Technology and post-graduate studies at Warsaw School of Economics and the National Defence University.

Professionally, he has been long dealing with the issues of ICT security, and currently of cybersecurity. He worked in the state administration, he was, inter alia, a department director at the National Security Bureau, and since 2003 he has been running his own consulting company, Trusted Information Consulting sp.z o.o. He was a member of the Computerization Council at the Ministry of Interior and Administration, and the Digitization Council at the Ministry of Digitization. He chairs the Telecommunications and Cybersecurity Competence Council.

An expert in area of audits and implementations of standards in the field of Information Security Management. Co-author of publications in the field of cryptography, participant in research projects on electronic signature solutions and Public Key Infrastructure.

In his spare time, he likes to read books, especially history books. In addition, he takes care of the memory of the scout battalions "Zośka" and "Parasol", which took part in the Warsaw Uprising.
