Our Graduate's Diploma Thesis Awarded by PTM

Wojciech Gabryelski, a graduate from Algorithmic Computer Science, is the author of a master's thesis distinguished in a competition organized by the Wrocław Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society. The work deals with the application of Boltzmann sampling in generating directed acyclic graphs. Congratulations!
The thesis titled "Boltzmann Sampler of Directed Acyclic Graphs" was written under the supervision of Dr. Zbigniew Gołębiewski from the Department of Fundamentals of Computer Science.
“My research consisted in designing a fast algorithm generating a random directed acyclic graph, i.e., DAG, with a specified number of vertices with equal probability. The algorithm is based on a technique called Boltzmann sampling, popular in analytic combinatorics for randomly generating combinatorial structures,” explains the laureate.
And he adds that such algorithms can be used among others in generating input data for algorithmic problems, e.g. to verify how an algorithm performs for randomly generated cases.

“Together with my supervisor, we have determined that the research was quite ok and its theoretical nature makes it suitable for the mathematical competition. We decided to send it, and it worked. Out of 16 submissions, four authors received the title of laureate, and another four were honourably mentioned. I am very happy with this result,” says Wojciech Gabryelski, M.Sc.
Currently he continues his research at the Doctoral School of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. His supervisor is Prof. Łukasz Krzywiecki, and his assistant supervisor is Dr. Zbigniew Gołębiewski.
“In my doctoral studies, I’m investigating algorithms based on Boltzmann sampling and I’m analysing various parameters of combinatorial classes. In general, my field is mainly analytic combinatorics and graph theory,” explains our PhD student.
The aim of the competition was to promote interest in the theory of probability and the applications of mathematics, as well as to distinguish theses which offer original theoretical results or demonstrate the practical use of mathematics in science and economy.
The award-presentation ceremony took place on 4 May, 2026 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Wrocław. Congratulations!
