Professor Magnus Goes to Prof. Ewaryst Rafajłowicz

Prof. Ewaryst Rafajłowicz from our Faculty, as well as Prof. Maciej Chorowski (Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering), Prof. Tomasz Downarowicz (Faculty of Mathematics), and Prof. Halina Podbielska (Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology) were awarded the professor magnus status in 2026. This important title is conferred by the rector, after consulting the Senate, in recognition of the contributions of distinguished individuals to science and our university.

The status of professor magnus is granted in a competition mode, conducted in the summer semester and granted for a period of three years by the rector, only at the request of the College of Chairmen of Scientific Discipline Councils, after consulting the Senate. Everyone who receives this title has the right to use it inside and outside the university.

The title holders are also allowed to be employed in the position of a professor with an unchanged working time and under the existing conditions after retirement. They may also be heads of departments at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (during the employment period).

Profiles of researchers who received the status of
professor magnus at Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 2026

Prof. Ewaryst Rafajłowicz (Faculty of Information and Communication Technology)

Prof. Ewaryst Rafajłowicz has held the title of professor for 30 years. His achievements are numerous: he obtained and implemented the “Master” FNP subsidy, he has been a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2016, and since 2022, he has been repeatedly appointed by RDN (formerly CK) as a reviewer in professorial applications and habilitation proceedings.

Half of his 178 publications are articles in journals, including 48 in the so-called Master Journal List, including some recent articles in the prestigious Nature Communications, Expert Systems, and Knowledge Based Systems. Some of the articles which cite his results expand the methods and algorithms that he developed. He also published three and edited four monographs.

The long-standing cooperation with universities in Montreal, Winnipeg, Berlin (later Teubingen and Magdeburg), and later also with RWTH Aachen and The University of Arizona has resulted in numerous publications, and in the case of RWTH Aachen, has also allowed Prof. Rafajłowicz to participate in a project on the quality control of photovoltaic panels.

He was a project manager in numerous grants or innovative research projects for the industry, related to production quality control using vision systems: FNP Master, OPUS NCN, KGHM, MNiSzW for defense, EIT Knowledge & Innovation Community Grant, in collaboration with the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Wrocław Tech.

He established the Production Quality Control Department and led it for 18 years. For two terms, he was the deputy director and for the next two, the director of the Institute of Technical Cybernetics. He co-organized and headed the department for five years. For three terms, he served as the chairman of the Committee on Organization and Finance of the WUST Senate and as a member of the Senate Presidium. It was a period of particularly intense work on using EU funds to expand Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

His work for the academic community extends far beyond Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Between 2010 and 2016, Prof. Ewaryst Rafajłowicz dedicated significant effort to “civilize” categorization. He was selected as the chairman of the Committee for Science and Technology at WUST, and after completing these duties in 2017, he took on the role of the rector's plenipotentiary for categorization. In 2016, he was also an expert at the Ministry of Economic Development for National Smart Specializations. He was elected to the board of the Wrocław Scientific Society for three terms.

Prof. Rafajłowicz has specific research plans for the coming years. His research will focus on expanding the capabilities, accuracy, and explainability of machine learning methods with potential applications in medicine. This area of AI has been, with the participation of Prof. Rafajłowicz, developed at Wrocław University of Science and Technology since the 1970s.

Previous research by Prof. Rafajłowicz focused on processing and classifying signals and images. Results of his work on reconstructing noisy signals (carried out together with Concordia and Manitoba Universities and further developed at the University of Ulm and Göttingen), as well as on planning optimal experiments (continued at Free Univ. Berlin, and later in Magdeburg), have entered international circulation.

Prof. Maciej Chorowski (Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering)

Prof. Maciej Chorowski is a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

He was awarded the title of professor of technical sciences in 2009. Between 1996 and 1998, he worked at CERN in Geneva, participating in the design of the cryogenic system of the Large Hadron Collider.

Between 2005 and 2012, he served as the dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, where he pioneered the training of personnel for the nuclear energy sector.

He was one of the initiators of establishing Wroclaw Technology Park SA. Between 2002 and 2012, he served as its president, and during this time the Park became one of the top development hubs for technology companies in Poland.

In the years 2016-2019, he served as the director of the National Centre for Research and Development, where he introduced new methods of financing research and development activities based on the experiences of the American DARPA agency.

Between 2020 and 2022, he served as the president of the National Fund for Environmental Protection, aiming to give the fund the character of an organization focused, among other things, on the transformation of the energy sector, crucial for achieving Polish environmental goals.

Between 2015 and 2025, he was a member of the National Development Council at the President of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Maciej Chorowski is an honorary member of the International Institute of Refrigeration in Paris and a member of the International Cryogenic Engineering Committee ICEC in Zurich.

He initiated the engagement of Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the Polish industry in the construction of large research facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, ITER thermonuclear reactor in Cadarache, FAIR accelerator complex in Darmstadt, XFEL free-electron laser in Hamburg, ESS spallation source in Lund, and other research facilities classified as “Big Science”.

Prof. Tomasz Downarowicz (Faculty of Mathematics)

Prof. Tomasz Downarowicz is a mathematician specializing in the theory of dynamic systems, particularly in topological dynamics, ergodic theory, entropy theory, and actions of amenable groups. After graduating from the 5th High School in Wrocław, he began his studies at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, to which he has devoted his entire career and where he currently works at the Faculty of Mathematics as a professor, holding the honorary title of professor magnus for the past three years.

He completed his studies in mathematics in 1979, obtained a doctoral degree in 1983, a habilitated doctorate in 1996, and the title of professor in 2005. In the years 1989-1991 and 2001-2003, he worked at various universities in the United States, and from 2013 to 2015 – at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

His scientific works include over 100 publications, the vast majority of which are in best mathematical journals, including Inventiones Mathematicae, Crele, and Memoirs of AMS. Moreover, he is the author of the monograph Entropy in Dynamical Systems published in 2011 by Cambridge University Press. His works have been cited over 1200 times – according to the Wrocław University of Science and Technology's DONA database and over 2600 times – according to ResearchGate; his Hirsch index is 19 (according to the Scopus database). In the years 2022-2023, he was among the top 2% most frequently cited scientists in the world, according to the Stanford University classification. He delivered presentations in over 100 conferences, including numerous keynote and invited lectures as well as series (mini-courses).

His most significant scientific achievements include the proof of the 'ergodic law of series' (described, among others, in Scholarpedia under the entry Law of series) and the development of symbolic extension theory for topological systems. The version concerning classical actions of integer groups was developed in the years 2001-2005 in collaboration with Mike Boyle (University of Maryland, USA), Sheldon Newhouse (Michigan State University, USA), and Alejandro Maass (University of Chile, Santiago, Chile) and was published in three articles in Inventiones Mathematicae. Its detailed description can also be found in the mentioned monograph. The version concerning actions of amenable groups was developed in the years 2017–2020 in cooperation with Guohua Zhang (Fudan University, China) and was published in 2023 in Memoirs of the AMS.

Since he was first awarded the professor magnus title, between 2023 and 2026, he has authored four new (published or accepted) scientific articles, and several more are currently under review or in preparation. Over that time, he delivered 12 conference presentations, 9 of which were plenary or invited talks. He is currently leading an NCN Opus research project (2023-2026), and previously he carried out, among others, grants under Maestro (2013-2018) and Harmonia (2019-2023) programs.

Prof. Tomasz Downarowicz has been on numerous research visits to foreign academic institutions, including the aforementioned long-term contracts in the United States (Ohio State University, University of North Texas, University of Maryland, Michigan State University), as well as shorter contracts in France, Germany, Chile, and China. In recent years, he conducted research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2023) and at Fudan University in Shanghai (2023, 2024).

He regularly reviews articles for leading mathematical journals such as Advances in Mathematics, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, and Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society.

He has significant educational and staff training achievements. He taught classes at all levels of education (not only to university students – during the crisis years, he also worked as a mathematics teacher at a private high school). He developed course programs, including specialist “Dynamic Systems” for second-cycle studies and “Ergodic Theory” for doctoral students. Since he obtained his habilitation, he has supervised four master's theses and seven doctoral dissertations. He has served as a reviewer in numerous doctoral, habilitation, and professorship procedures (in the last three years, since obtaining the honorary title, he has been a reviewer in two professorship procedures).

Prof. Downarowicz has a significant role in the academic life of both national and international mathematical community. Since 2019, he has been a vice president of the Polish Mathematical Society, where he is responsible, among other things, for organizing the most important mathematical competitions and awards, including the Stefan Banach Award, the Hugo Steinhaus Award, and the International Banach Prize. The latter is funded by a consortium of mathematics departments from the largest national universities, and was established at his initiative.

Since 2023, he has served as the director of the Rylla-Nardzewski Centre at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. As part of this activity, he initiated and co-organized the “Ryll-Nardzewski Day” series of events (2023-2025) and renowned international competitions, including the Ryll-Nardzewski Prize sponsored by the Mayor of Wrocław and the Early Career Ryll-Nardzewski Prize sponsored by Amotho company.

His scientific work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Main Prize of the Polish Mathematical Society in honor of Stefan Banach (2010), an individual award from the Minister of Science and Higher Education, twice (2005 and 2012), and multiple awards from the rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, including the prestigious Hugo Steinhaus Award in 2018, and the most recent one (for the overall activity) in 2025.

His scientific achievements, teaching activities, and organizational involvement has made him one of the best-recognized Polish mathematicians worldwide, especially as regards the Polish school of dynamic systems theory.

Prof. Halina Podbielska (Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology)

Prof. Halina Podbielska is a prominent representative of Polish biomedical engineering. Since the beginning of her professional career, she has been associated with Wrocław University of Science and Technology, successfully combining research, educational, and organizational activities, and contributing to the development of the university and of a modern education model at the intersection of technical and medical sciences.

She graduated with honours from the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, as well as from the Medical Faculty at Wrocław Medical University. She received a PhD in Physics with distinction, then a habilitation degree, and in 2002 she was awarded the title of Professor of Engineering and Technology.

She further developed her competences in postgraduate studies organized by our Faculty of Computer Science and Management in cooperation with Central Connecticut State University, as well as in numerous internships and research stays at renowned foreign institutions.

Prof. Halina Podbielska has had an international scientific and research career. She was a scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She also did research at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, the University of Münster, the Weizmann Institute in Israel, and as a visiting professor at the Technical University in Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

She has collaborated with numerous leading research centres in Europe and around the world.

Prof. Halina Podbielska has been a key figure in the development of biomedical engineering in Poland. She has contributed to the reactivation of this field of study and to its dynamic development at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

She co-founded the Institute of Biomedical and Measurement Engineering, and served as its director for many years, later becoming the head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

She actively participated in teams preparing accreditations and evaluations, which resulted in obtaining the highest quality of education ratings, including the prestigious Certificate of Excellence in Education from the Polish Accreditation Commission.

Her teaching activity is an example of a modern, interdisciplinary approach to education. She has developed numerous courses and series of lectures, in both Polish and English.

She was a co-initiator of the English-language Medical Informatics specialization, which has developed into an independent field of study. She has placed particular emphasis on combining academic education with practice.

Prof. Podbielska has also influenced the education of early-career research staff. She has been a supervisor for over 140 graduates of engineering and master's studies, as well as 11 doctoral candidates, most of whom received distinctions. Many of her students have attained further academic degrees, assuming independent academic and managerial positions.

Her scientific work comprises over 400 scientific publications, 13 patents, and 10 edited monographs and scientific books, including those published by renowned international publishers.

She has led numerous national and international projects, including those implemented in European programs. Her research interests include biooptics, biomaterials, medical nanotechnologies, medical imaging diagnostics, AI-assisted image recognition, personalized medicine, medical thermography, and innovative technologies supporting therapy and rehabilitation.

She has cooperated with the industry and the healthcare sector. She co-developed innovative, practical and patented solutions in the field of biomaterials, medical implants, and diagnostic methods.

The results of her research contribute to the development of modern medicine and the transfer of knowledge from the university to the economy.

Prof. Podbielska actively contributes to the academic community both in the country and abroad. She is a member of the Committee of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and also a deputy chairperson, a member of numerous scientific councils, as well as an expert for the ministry and in international programs.

She sits on scientific boards of international journals and scientific organizations related to personalized medicine and biomedical engineering.

Owing to her ability to integrate scientific, medical, and industrial environments, strategic thinking, and consistent implementation of innovations, Professor Halina Podbielska has significantly contributed to the development of Polish biomedical engineering.

For her scientific, didactic, and organizational activities, she has received numerous prestigious national and international awards and distinctions, including the Medal of the National Education Commission, the Docendo Discimus distinction of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, OSA Senior Member, EPMA AWARD for contributions to the promotion of personalized medicine. She was awarded the Merito de Wratislavia medal for her social work.

She is an honorary member of the Polish Society of Biomedical Engineering.
