There is now an English version of the ToPWR mobile application developed by our Strategic Student Research Club Solvro. The application is designed to help students find their way around the university. Thanks to the new functionality, it is available to everyone, regardless of the language they speak.
The ToPWR application was developed by students for students. Its purpose is to effectively introduce first-year students to the academic community, but also to make life easier for more experienced students.
It contains a campus map along with photos of the buildings, a day counter until the upcoming session, information about dean's offices, science clubs and free parking spaces.
– There are guides for students about dormitories, retake courses, classroom etiquette, or the Erasmus programme. There's the SKS canteen's menu, and information about all faculties and fields of study. Another functionality has been suggested by the Student Activity Support Department – it is going to be a digital guide for people with disabilities – claims Szymon Kowaliński, the head of the mobile section and tech lead of the mobile part of the application.
The English version of ToPWR is already working. The app's developers planned to launch it later, but they managed to complete it under schedule. The motivation was the fact that they were approached on this matter by the Centre for International Relations.
– The Polish version is cool, but the information it contains can often be found in other sources as well. On the other hand, the English version is unique in that it provides information practically unavailable in English elsewhere. And it's all in one app – adds Szymon Kowaliński.
The Solvro Student Research Club now wants to check how users react to the English version of ToPWR.
– We are releasing a form through the Centre to gather feedback from international students about their needs. We want to hear their suggestions about other possible functionalities. After all, they may have completely different needs than students from Poland – notes Jakub Czajkowski, the tech lead of the backend team.
The project has been developed from scratch by the Solvro club, and its first version was released in October 2022. The idea came from Jakub Legut. The ToPWR has evolved from a mobile application to four independent projects.
– There is the application that we are further developing. The second one is the backend project of an admin panel for our internal use, to manage content in the application. Thirdly, we have a frontend project for the admin panel. This is a web service that we will make available to individual WUST units so that they can add articles to our application and change information, of course under our control. Finally, we also have a knowledge graph, in which we are currently gathering information about the university – explains Michał Malicki, project manager of the ToPWR app.
The developers hope to that in the future they will be able to offer a Talk to PWR chatbot integrated with other ToPWR products.
