Discover the researcher within you, fulfil your scientific dreams. Do a Ph.D. at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The Doctoral School is presently accepting applications. And we encourage you to learn about the history of the doctoral students from our university. Among them is Dominika Kunc, from the Department of Artificial Intelligence at our Faculty. Her scientific discipline is information and communication technology.

After having received her master's degree, Dominika Kunc wasunsure about pursuing a doctorate. Her second-cycle studies were such an intense period for her that she felt she needed a break and probably some more balance in her life. However, she couldn't quiet her passion for research.

– I finally made up my mind. Even more so, as I was offered a programme that involved trips to top scientific centres. And that was a good decision – explains Dominika.

She is engaged in a unique and challenging scientific project. And she does take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the Doctoral School and our Department.

– have completed research internships in Los Angeles and Singapore, I run classes with students, but above all, I manage to maintain balance. Besides, I live in Kudowa and have organised everything in such a way that I come to Wrocław only on a couple days and work remotely on the remaining days. It doesn't mean at all that I'm missing out on something – says the Ph.D. student.

She emphasises that she works in an ambitious team that constantly seeks grant opportunities and develops collaboration with centres in Poland and abroad.

– My supervisors motivate me, push me to act, and inspire me. And they often say that we should keep trying and that nobody expects us to be the best at something right away. Someone has to be first, set the direction of activities, a path for others to follow. In other words, it's about „planting the flag" and saying: we did it first, and we’ll keep developing it – join us if you want – she explains.

Dominika Kunc is motivated by the fact that, as part of her doctorate, she is working on a unique topic that no one has tackled before. It utilises, among other things, machine learning techniques to recognise emotions in everyday life from physiological signals.

– In my research, I combine computer science and psychology, which demands a lot from me. I am constantly learning new things, seeking a common language for engineers and psychologists, and exploring new paths. I feel like I'm creating something completely new. Moreover, the scientific community is very interested in my research and the data I have collected. This is so motivating – notes our doctoral student.

You can read about the experiences of other Ph.D. students here. The Doctoral School at Wrocław University of Science and Technology is currently recruiting for the academic year 2025/2026. Those interested in Ph.D. studies can submit their applications in the recruitment system from 6 May to 3 June 2025. There are 13 disciplines to choose from, and 250 available places.
