Sebastian Patyk, a student of our Faculty, won four gold medals during the 7th Academic Polish Championships in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And there's more beyond his individual successes. Wrocław University of Science and Technology with Sebastian among its representatives came in second in the team competition. Congratulations!
The 7th Academic Polish Championships in Brasilian Jiu Jitsu took place on 31 May in Poznań. Our student, Sebastian Patyk, competed in four categories and won all of them. He fought in the gi format, which involves wearing kimonos, and in no-gi, which means without kimonos. In both cases, he competed in his category (purple belts up to 82.3 kg) and in the open category, where he faced competitors from different weight categories – with purple, brown, and black belts.
– This is sport and no victory is guaranteed, but I certainly felt like the favourite. That's because I have been competing in various competitions, including international ones, for 10 years. I am on the Polish national team. I had many fights in Poznań. I had to struggle quite hard to win those 4 gold medals – admits Sebastian Patyk
Sebastian won all his fights by knockout, which further confirms his high level in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Our talented athlete is a first-year student in the field of Information Technology in Automation Systems. He has been training jiu-jitsu since he was 8. His dad took him to the first training session. Currently, he is training professionally at Wrox Gym Wrocław under Tomasz Skórkowski, the club's head coach.
Our student's aspiration is to join the world's elite. Participating in the academic championships was an opportunity for him to test his skills against other students and university staff. This is also an opportunity to represent the university.
– It's great that I was able to help Wrocław University of Science and Technology become the second-best university in the team classification. Importantly, it was a team effort with Dr. Krzysztof Fonał, an academic teacher – emphasizes Sebastian.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling sport whose main idea is to dominate the opponent by using throws, locks, and chokes, as well as through the control provided by proper grips.
