Project by Neuron With FAST Funding

Wroclaw Academic Centre has announced the winners of the eighth edition of the Student Activity Fund (FAST) programme. A project by our Neuron Neuroinformatics Student Research Club is among eight projects from Wrocław University of Science and Technology that received funding. Congratulations!

The Student Activity Fund (FAST) is a municipal programme supporting academic entrepreneurship, scientific excellence and creativity among students and PhD students from Wrocław universities and institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The scope of funded projects is open and aligned with the profile of student research clubs, groups or organisations. Each submitted proposal could receive funding of up to PLN 15,000.

This year’s edition attracted nearly 90 applications, of which 22 projects were awarded funding, including as many as eight from Wrocław University of Science and Technology. In total, our organisations secured nearly PLN 95,000 to develop their ideas.

The winning project from our Faculty, NeuroScholAR, aims to investigate whether learning can be accelerated by combining ancient memorisation techniques with modern technologies.

– We are developing a learning system based on AR (augmented reality) glasses and a brain–computer interface (EEG headset). The solution will allow users to display virtual notes in space and anchor them to specific locations in a room (similar to the method of loci), while automatically detecting when the learner loses focus and suggesting a break or a change in learning mode – explain the project authors.

The solution developed by the Neuron team will enable displaying notes in augmented reality, assigning them to locations within a room (as in a memory palace), automatically detecting loss of focus and suggesting breaks or alternative learning approaches.

The system will additionally assess the level of knowledge acquisition based on EEG signals and dynamically adapt learning sessions to the user. The team also plans to conduct an experiment to evaluate how modern tools can support and enhance cognitive functions.

– The funding will be used to purchase equipment necessary for the project: a mobile spatial computing device from XREAL and EEG headbands for brain–computer interface (BCI) from BrainBit – the team adds.

The project team includes: Wiktor Golimowski, Tymoteusz Marzec, Natalia Sperczyńska, Katarzyna Piórkowska and Mateusz Gawłowski.
