Dr Marek Kopel, a researcher from the Department of Applied Computer Science, won an auction organised by Academic Radio LUZ in support of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP). As a result, he had the opportunity to co-host the Audiostarter programme, where he shared his favourite sounds and spoke about his musical journey.

During the show, Dr Marek Kopel spoke about his involvement in the Academic Choir of Wrocław University of Science and Technology and highlighted that he is currently active in the University Big Band. He also presented a selection of his favourite tracks spanning choral music, soul, musical theatre and rock.

He is also the drummer of the faculty band WITels, which has performed at numerous faculty events, including Student Activity Days, Open Days and the WIT Picnic.

WITels features: Prof. Andrzej Kucharski (bass guitar), Prof. Paweł Wachel (electric guitar), Prof. Tomasz Kajdanowicz (electric guitar), Dr Marek Kopel (drums), and Paula Sobok (vocals).

Dr Kopel can also be heard as a vocalist. Together with Dr Maciej Walczyński, he supervises the In4Music student research club, which brings together students interested in the intersection of technology and music.

As he notes on his website, he has been affiliated with Wrocław University of Science and Technology since 2001. He obtained his PhD in computer science and has held the position of assistant professor since 2011. He currently teaches courses in video game development, information retrieval and databases. His research interests include video game technologies, sound and music computing, and metadata in Web 3.0 (Semantic Web).

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity took place this year on Sunday, 26 January, raising funds for paediatric oncology and haematology, with a focus on children’s health and safety. As every year, the Wrocław Tech community joined the effort by organising its own charity auctions.
